Author and translator Frederik L. Schodt, the man who translated the Astro Boy manga for Dark Horse, was honored by the Japanese government last month with the Order of the Rising Sun for his work in bringing Japanese popular culture to the English speaking world. This is certainly a much deserved accolade.
The ceremony was held in San Fransisco, and lucky for us, a couple of the attendees have shared their experience online. Check out Same Hat! for Jared Cook's report, complete with info on the award and pictures. Then take a look at The Bittermelon for Jenn Yin's coverage, which contains a video of Tezuka Production's president Takayuki Matsutani singing the Tetsuwan Atomu theme song. Yes, you read that right. Must be seen to be believed!
Fred himself has uploaded the text he wrote for his acceptance speech. It's a great read so check it out here. Really puts into perspective just how far we've come in the world of Manga.
Major congratulations go out to Mr. Schodt for earning such a prestigious award.
